Tottenham Hotspur are turning up the pressure in their pursuit of Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, with the North London club reportedly making formal contact as Roberto De Zerbi looks to complete what could become one of the biggest attacking moves of the summer.
Spurs have already transformed their squad during a hugely ambitious transfer window. Martin Dúbravka has arrived from Newcastle United to provide experienced goalkeeping depth, while Andrew Robertson brings elite Premier League experience, leadership and quality at left-back. Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke have strengthened the heart of the defence, giving De Zerbi more options and composure when building from the back.
In midfield, Tottenham have gone even bigger. Mateus Fernandes offers energy, creativity, pressing and progressive passing, while Sandro Tonali brings elite experience, intensity and leadership. Yet despite all that spending and squad rebuilding, one major question remains: where is the explosive attacker capable of making the difference in decisive moments?
That is where Gakpo could come in.
Tottenham have made no secret of their desire to add another left-winger before the transfer window closes. Manchester City winger Savinho has also been on their radar, but Gakpo is increasingly emerging as the player who could provide the biggest immediate impact.
The Liverpool forward endured criticism during a difficult campaign for the Reds last season, but his numbers tell a much more positive story. Gakpo finished the season with nine goals and six assists, producing 15 direct goal contributions despite the challenges surrounding Liverpool.
For Tottenham, those numbers are extremely significant.
A player capable of producing nine goals and six assists would have been among the most productive attackers in Spurs’ frontline. More importantly, Gakpo has the versatility to operate from the left, play centrally and attack spaces in different ways. That tactical flexibility could make him particularly attractive to De Zerbi.
And now, the transfer chase appears to be entering a potentially explosive phase.
According to Dutch journalist Joost Blaauwhof, Tottenham have made “formal” contact regarding a move for Gakpo, while the player is reportedly open to leaving Liverpool before the summer window closes.
That development could be enormous for Spurs.
Tottenham may now be waiting for Liverpool’s plans to become clearer. The Reds are reportedly pursuing other attacking targets, including Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye. If Liverpool succeed in bringing in additional attacking talent, Gakpo’s position could suddenly become far less secure.
That could create the opening Tottenham have been waiting for.
The Dutchman has already demonstrated that he can perform at the highest level, and his previous spell of impressive form helped Liverpool during their Premier League title-winning campaign under Arne Slot. His ability to combine physicality, movement, finishing and creativity makes him an intriguing option for De Zerbi’s system.
Former Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole has also previously praised Gakpo’s qualities, highlighting the level the Dutch international can reach when confidence and consistency come together.
For Tottenham supporters, the prospect is mouth-watering.
Imagine a Spurs attack with Gakpo providing another powerful outlet on the left, supported by the creativity and energy of a newly rebuilt midfield. Suddenly, Tottenham would have greater variety, more goal threat and another player capable of changing a match in an instant.
De Zerbi has already overseen a dramatic rebuild, but Gakpo could be the signing that takes the project to another level.
The question now is whether Tottenham can convince Liverpool to sell.
If the Reds decide that Gakpo can be sacrificed to finance or accommodate their own attacking ambitions, Spurs could be ready to pounce. And with the Dutchman reportedly open to the move, the biggest obstacle may simply be Liverpool’s willingness to negotiate.
Tottenham have spent heavily this summer, but this could be the final statement signing.
Gakpo would not simply be another addition to De Zerbi’s squad. He could be the missing attacking weapon, the player capable of turning possession into goals and helping Tottenham compete at the highest level.
The chase is heating up, and Spurs supporters may have every reason to believe that a major transfer bombshell could be coming before the window slams shut.
