Paul Scholes Urges Man Utd to Make Shock Move for Premier League Star This Summer
Manchester United have been urged to make a major statement in the transfer market this summer, with club legend Paul Scholes calling on the Red Devils to pursue a surprise move for Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton.
United’s need for reinforcements is no secret, particularly in central defence and midfield, and Scholes believes the club should be prepared to spend big if the right player becomes available. With several high-profile names already being linked with moves to Old Trafford, the former England midfielder has now thrown another Premier League star into the conversation.
Scholes has also spoken strongly about Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero, suggesting that Manchester United should seriously consider making a move for the Argentine despite concerns over his disciplinary record.
The former Manchester United midfielder was discussing the possibility of Romero leaving Tottenham when he made his feelings clear.
“They’re talking about £30 or £40 million for a player who has been centre-half in a World Cup final,” Scholes argued.
“I know he’s got disciplinary issues, but I would go and get him. I think they’re desperate for a centre-back, the current ones aren’t good enough.”
That assessment is certain to generate plenty of debate among Manchester United supporters. Romero is widely regarded as an aggressive, committed and technically gifted defender, but his tendency to collect cards and occasionally cross the line has also been a major talking point throughout his career.
Nevertheless, Scholes believes United should look beyond those concerns and focus on the quality the defender could bring to their backline.
Romero has been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid in recent weeks, while Arsenal and Barcelona have also reportedly been monitoring the situation. That growing interest could make any attempt from Manchester United significantly more complicated.
But Scholes did not stop with Romero.
The United legend also questioned why the club would not make a serious attempt to sign Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, a player he believes could become an ideal addition to the Old Trafford midfield.
“I can’t believe they’re not trying to buy Adam Wharton,” Scholes said.
“Sandro Tonali would have been my first choice, but with him gone now, Adam Wharton looks perfect to me.”
Wharton has rapidly established himself as one of the Premier League’s most exciting young midfielders. Despite his age, the England international has already attracted attention from some of the biggest clubs in Europe, with his composure, passing ability and intelligence in possession making him an increasingly valuable asset.
Manchester United have reportedly been pursuing a move for the 22-year-old, but Palace are believed to be demanding a staggering fee of around £86 million before considering his departure.
That valuation could represent a major stumbling block for United, particularly as the club has several areas of the squad that require investment.
Chelsea and Real Madrid are also reportedly interested in Wharton, meaning United could face an intense battle if they decide to push ahead with a formal approach.
For United, however, the attraction is obvious.
Wharton could provide greater control and composure in midfield while potentially becoming a long-term cornerstone of the team. His age also makes him particularly appealing as the club looks to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level for years to come.
Scholes’ comments therefore raise an intriguing question: should United spend heavily on established stars, or should they gamble on younger Premier League talent with enormous potential?
With Romero potentially available for a relatively affordable £30-40 million and Wharton reportedly valued at £86 million, United could find themselves facing two completely different transfer decisions.
One thing is certain: the pressure on Manchester United to strengthen is enormous. Supporters expect significant changes, and Scholes’ latest comments have only added fuel to the transfer debate.
Whether the club listens to its legendary midfielder remains to be seen, but if United were to land both Romero and Wharton, it would undoubtedly send a huge message to their Premier League rivals.
