Tottenham Make Big Decision After £27M Sale As £100M Star Prepares To Take Over
When the clock moved towards 4am and England were desperately trying to hold on against Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium, Djed Spence’s brief appearance immediately caught the attention of many Tottenham supporters. For those watching in the early hours, the right-back looked every bit like a £100m superstar rather than a player who would leave Tottenham just weeks later for a reported £27m.

Perhaps the lack of sleep made his performance look even more impressive. Nevertheless, Spence’s cameo was enough to remind everyone why England manager Thomas Tuchel had trusted him with a place in his squad despite plenty of doubts surrounding his selection.
Before the tournament, many questioned whether Spence had done enough to justify his inclusion. He had come off the back of a difficult campaign in which Tottenham struggled for consistency, and there were several other defenders who appeared to have stronger claims for a place in England’s squad, including Lewis Hall, Luke Shaw and Myles Lewis-Skelly.
Spence, however, used his opportunity to silence some of those critics. His performances for England showed flashes of the pace, attacking ability and confidence that had made Tottenham invest in him in the first place.
The problem for Spence was that those performances were not consistently replicated in North London.

Tottenham Have Made the Right Decision
There is little doubt that Inter have managed to negotiate an attractive deal for Spence. In the current transfer market, £27m for a Premier League-trained full-back who is only 26 years old represents excellent value for the Italian club.
From Tottenham’s perspective, however, the bigger question is not whether Inter have secured a bargain. It is whether Spurs were right to accept the offer.
The answer should be yes.
Tottenham have reached a point where consistency is crucial. The club cannot afford to carry players who occasionally produce outstanding performances but struggle to maintain that level over an entire season.
Spence’s impressive international cameos should not completely erase the concerns that existed around his Tottenham career. His best moments demonstrated what he could do, but his overall performances in a Spurs shirt did not always match the potential he appeared to possess.
With Andy Robertson now providing another option alongside Pedro Porro, Tottenham also have greater competition and experience across the full-back positions. That makes Spence’s departure easier to understand, particularly if the club believes his position can be strengthened internally.
The statistics also provide some context. Despite being 32 and arguably beyond his physical peak, Robertson was still able to outperform Spence in several areas last season. That does not mean Spence lacks ability, but it does underline why Tottenham may have decided that the position could be upgraded.
For a club attempting to challenge at the highest level, every position has to contribute consistently. Spence simply did not look like a guaranteed long-term starter.
Tottenham Already Have Spence’s Replacement

Perhaps the biggest reason Spurs can afford to let Spence leave is that they already have an exciting alternative waiting in the squad.
That player is Archie Gray.
The 20-year-old has the versatility, technical ability and intelligence to become one of the biggest beneficiaries of Spence’s departure. Gray can operate in midfield or defence, and his previous experience at right-back means Tottenham do not necessarily need to rush back into the transfer market for another player.
Under Roberto De Zerbi, Gray could have the perfect environment to develop further.
De Zerbi has traditionally demanded that his defenders remain comfortable in possession while also taking calculated risks when moving the ball forward. That approach could suit Gray perfectly.
The youngster has already demonstrated that he is capable of playing as a full-back, particularly during his time at Leeds United. His ability to step into midfield, progress the ball and contribute to the build-up could make him an ideal option for De Zerbi’s system.
With Tottenham having already invested heavily in the squad this summer, reportedly spending around £200m, another major expenditure on a right-back may not be necessary.
Instead, the club can use the departure of Spence as an opportunity to accelerate Gray’s development.
De Zerbi Could Turn Gray Into a Key Weapon
De Zerbi’s previous teams provide an interesting clue about how Gray could be used.
The Italian coach has often relied on full-backs who are comfortable moving into different areas of the pitch. During Brighton’s 4-2 victory over Tottenham in the 2023/24 campaign, midfielder Jack Hinshelwood operated at right-back and demonstrated how effective a versatile player can be in that position.
Hinshelwood was able to contribute to Brighton’s build-up while also providing an attacking threat. He finished that game with a goal, three passes into the final third and, importantly, was not dispossessed.
That type of performance could provide a blueprint for Gray.
With Porro capable of playing as the more adventurous, attack-minded full-back, Gray could potentially take on a slightly more controlled role. His job would be to help Tottenham build from the back, support the midfield and provide defensive stability without sacrificing the ability to move forward when opportunities arise.
That balance could become particularly important under De Zerbi.
The Italian is known for his emphasis on patient possession and creating spaces through movement. His approach, often associated with the idea of “pausa”, requires players who can remain calm under pressure before suddenly accelerating the attack.
Gray appears well suited to that philosophy.
Gray Could Be Tottenham’s Next Breakout Star
There is already significant belief in Gray’s potential. He has previously been described as a potential future £100m player by Como scout Ben Mattinson, highlighting the level of expectation surrounding the young Englishman.
Tottenham therefore have a major opportunity.
Rather than viewing Spence’s departure purely as a loss, Spurs can see it as a chance to give Gray more responsibility and accelerate his development into a first-team regular.
At just 20, Gray still has plenty of room to improve. He has already gained valuable experience in multiple positions, and another full season playing under a coach like De Zerbi could take his game to another level.
The key will be ensuring that he is given enough opportunities to establish himself.
Tottenham supporters may initially focus on the £27m fee received for Spence, particularly when considering the current cost of quality Premier League full-backs. However, the bigger story could eventually be what Spurs do with the opportunity created by his departure.
If Gray develops into the player Tottenham believe he can become, the decision to sell Spence could look increasingly sensible.
Spurs Should Trust Their Young Star
Ultimately, Tottenham’s decision is not simply about selling Djed Spence for £27m. It is about reshaping the squad and making room for players who fit the club’s long-term plans.
Spence had moments where he showed why he was highly rated, particularly during his England cameo. But flashes of brilliance are not enough for a club with ambitions of competing for major honours.
Tottenham need reliability, tactical flexibility and players capable of fitting into De Zerbi’s footballing philosophy.
Gray potentially offers all three.
If De Zerbi can unlock the youngster’s full potential and use him effectively from right-back, Tottenham could discover that they did not actually need to spend millions replacing Spence.
