Cody Gakpo produced one of his most impressive performances in a Liverpool shirt as the Reds fought back to secure a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday.
The Netherlands international was instrumental in Liverpool’s comeback, scoring the visitors’ first equaliser with a superb long-range finish that brought the game level at 1-1. His goal was not the only highlight of his afternoon, however, as Gakpo remained a constant threat throughout the contest and was arguably Liverpool’s standout performer.
The 27-year-old showed excellent movement, confidence in possession and a willingness to take responsibility in the final third. His performance was particularly encouraging given the difficulties he experienced during the 2025-26 campaign, when his form was frequently questioned by supporters.
Gakpo has been strongly linked with a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur this summer, with Spurs keen to add more quality and versatility to their attacking options. Liverpool are understood to be reluctant to part ways with the Dutchman, especially with their attacking depth already under pressure, but a substantial offer could potentially force the club to reconsider.
Reports have previously suggested that a bid in the region of £60 million could test Liverpool’s resolve. However, following Gakpo’s excellent display at St James’ Park, there could now be an argument for the Reds to demand closer to £70m if Tottenham or another interested club makes a serious approach.
Gakpo shines when Liverpool need him most
There is no doubt that Gakpo endured a frustrating 2025-26 season. The winger struggled to maintain consistency and was regularly criticised by sections of the Liverpool fanbase for failing to reach the levels expected of him.
His performance against Newcastle, though, offered a timely reminder of what he can bring to Arne Slot’s attack.
Gakpo was involved in several dangerous attacking situations and repeatedly found ways to cause problems for Newcastle’s defence. According to FotMob, he recorded an expected goals figure of 0.24, created three chances and attempted six shots, with one finding the target.
He also made 10 touches inside the opposition penalty area, completed eight line-breaking passes, won possession through two tackles and registered five recoveries. Those numbers underline how involved he was throughout the match and why his contribution went beyond simply scoring the equaliser.
A performance of that quality could have a direct impact on his value in the transfer market. If Liverpool were previously considering offers around £60m, they could now feel justified in demanding an additional £10m or more for a player who has shown he can make a difference at the highest level.
Liverpool have little reason to sell
From Liverpool’s perspective, allowing Gakpo to leave at this stage of the summer would be a major gamble.
The Reds are already looking to strengthen their attacking options, particularly with the need to eventually replace the production and influence of Mohamed Salah. Losing another established forward without securing an adequate replacement would leave Slot with fewer options as the season progresses.
Gakpo’s ability to operate across the frontline also makes him particularly valuable. He can play from the left, through the middle or in other attacking roles, giving Liverpool tactical flexibility that would be difficult to replace.
As a result, only a huge offer is likely to convince Liverpool to consider selling him. Tottenham may remain interested, but they would probably need to significantly increase their valuation if they want to prise the Dutchman away from Anfield.
Liverpool still have major transfer plans
Liverpool are not expected to be finished with their summer recruitment either, with Bradley Barcola reportedly remaining one of their main targets as the transfer deadline approaches.
The Paris Saint-Germain winger has been linked with a move to Anfield for much of the summer as Liverpool explore options capable of helping fill the enormous void left by Salah.
Barcola is regarded as one of the most exciting young attacking players in European football, but negotiations have reportedly been complicated by a difference in valuation between Liverpool and PSG. The two clubs have yet to completely bridge that gap, although there is still time for an agreement to be reached.
With the transfer window closing on September 1, Liverpool will need to move quickly if Barcola is genuinely their priority target. The Reds must balance their desire to add attacking quality with the need to protect the players already in Slot’s squad.
For now, Gakpo’s performance against Newcastle will only strengthen Liverpool’s argument for keeping him. If Tottenham return with a proposal, the Merseyside club may demand a significantly higher fee than previously anticipated.
Sunday’s display was a reminder that Gakpo still possesses the quality to be a decisive player for Liverpool. If he can build on that performance consistently, Liverpool may soon find themselves with an even bigger reason to reject offers for their Dutch forward.
