Tottenham Hotspur’s opening-day clash with Brentford has delivered a first half full of frustration, pressure and major talking points, with several Spurs players struggling to impose themselves as the Bees repeatedly exposed weaknesses at the back and disrupted Tottenham’s rhythm in midfield.
The first 45 minutes have been particularly difficult for some of Tottenham’s younger players, while several high-profile summer arrivals have also found themselves under serious pressure. With Brentford pressing aggressively and attacking with real intensity, Spurs have struggled to build sustained momentum and create clear opportunities.
Archie Gray – 4/10
Archie Gray endured a hugely difficult first half against Brentford. The youngster has repeatedly struggled to contain Kevin Schade on Tottenham’s right, with the Brentford winger using his pace and movement to beat Gray and get behind the Spurs defence. Gray has been forced into a defensive battle for much of the opening period and will need to improve considerably after the break.
Jan Paul van Hecke – 5/10
Van Hecke has been one of the busier Tottenham defenders, spending much of the first half dealing with Brentford’s relentless pressure. The centre-back has made several important blocks and interceptions as the Bees pressed high and attempted to force Spurs into mistakes. Although he has worked hard, Brentford’s attacking pressure has left little room for Tottenham’s defence to breathe.
Marcos Senesi – 4/10
Making his Tottenham debut, Marcos Senesi has shown plenty of aggression and confidence despite the difficult circumstances. The Argentine defender has regularly stepped forward into midfield when pressing and has looked comfortable trying to win the ball high up the pitch. His distribution and build-up play have also offered some encouragement. However, the goal conceded by Spurs has inevitably affected his rating, making this a challenging introduction.
Andy Robertson – 4/10
Robertson has surprisingly had very little influence going forward. The experienced full-back has barely been able to overlap and provide support to Mathys Tel, largely because Tottenham have been pinned back by Brentford’s pressure. He did produce an important last-ditch tackle to prevent another dangerous attack, but Brentford’s opener came from his side of the pitch, leaving him with plenty to improve in the second half.
Sandro Tonali – 4/10
Tonali has seen plenty of the ball on his Tottenham debut and has attempted to dictate the game from deep. Unfortunately for Spurs, Brentford have been quick to close him down, preventing the midfielder from finding the space needed to influence proceedings. He did make an important block from a Brentford effort near the edge of the box, but overall his impact has been limited.
Lucas Bergvall – 3/10
Bergvall has worked tirelessly, showing energy in Tottenham’s pressing and aggression in challenges. However, his first half ultimately contained a major mistake. The Swedish midfielder was dispossessed during the build-up to Brentford’s second goal after failing to win the duel strongly enough. That costly moment has overshadowed his otherwise energetic performance and earned him one of the lowest ratings.
Conor Gallagher – 3/10
Gallagher has struggled to make an impact in the number 10 role. The midfielder has managed just one attempt, which came early in the half and failed to trouble the Brentford goal. Tottenham have lacked creativity through the middle, and Gallagher will need to become far more influential if Spurs are to turn the game around.
Mikey Moore – 4/10
Mikey Moore has barely had an opportunity to influence the game. Tottenham’s attacks have been limited, leaving the youngster starved of meaningful possession. With Brentford controlling large portions of the first half, Moore has been unable to show the attacking qualities Spurs supporters know he possesses.
Richarlison – 3/10
Richarlison has tried to contribute by dropping deeper and linking up with Gallagher and Tel, but the Brazilian has been unable to find dangerous positions around the Brentford penalty area. His willingness to help build attacks has been noticeable, but Tottenham desperately need more threat from their forward line.
Mathys Tel – 4/10
Tel has struggled to reproduce the magic of his impressive pre-season free kick. After Richarlison won a promising set piece, Tel’s effort went through the wall but was comfortably collected by Kelleher. The French forward has linked up with Richarlison at times, but his trademark driving runs have been largely missing.
Overall, Tottenham’s first half has been a major test of Roberto De Zerbi’s side. Brentford’s intensity has disrupted Spurs in almost every area of the pitch, while several Tottenham players have failed to reach the level expected on the opening day.
With the second half still to come, Spurs will need a dramatic improvement in energy, creativity and defensive concentration if they are to change the story and give their supporters something to celebrate.
