Spurs Make Surprise Move for 6ft 4in Giant With 18 G/A as Tottenham Consider Stunning Gakpo Alternative

Tottenham Eye Sensational Jean-Philippe Mateta Move as Spurs Seek Major Upgrade Up Front

Tottenham Hotspur could be preparing for another major move in the transfer market, with reports claiming that the North London club have identified Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta as a potential solution to their attacking concerns.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham have expressed serious interest in the 29-year-old French forward after being impressed by his performances in the Premier League. Spurs are believed to view Mateta as a player capable of adding greater physicality, power and ruthlessness to their frontline as they look to strengthen Roberto De Zerbi’s squad.

Mateta has developed into one of Crystal Palace’s most important players since arriving at Selhurst Park. The striker initially joined the Eagles on loan in 2021 after making his name at Mainz, before Palace eventually made the transfer permanent the following year.

Since then, the Frenchman has transformed himself into a proven Premier League forward.

His recent form has attracted plenty of attention, with Mateta contributing 18 goals and assists across all competitions last season. His performances have also helped him earn recognition at international level, eventually securing a place in France’s World Cup squad.

Although he was unable to establish himself as a regular starter for Les Bleus, his inclusion highlighted just how far his career has progressed.

Now, however, Mateta’s future at Crystal Palace has suddenly become a major talking point.

Football Insider claims that the striker has entered the final 12 months of his contract and has rejected several proposals from Palace to extend his stay. That situation could place the Eagles under increasing pressure, particularly if Tottenham decide to turn their interest into a formal offer before the transfer window closes.

Tottenham are reportedly convinced that Mateta could represent an upgrade on Dominic Solanke and provide De Zerbi with another powerful attacking option.

The interest is reportedly not new, either. Spurs have been monitoring Mateta for some time and were said to have considered making a move for him as far back as January. That long-standing interest could now become serious as Tottenham look to complete their summer recruitment.

Palace, understandably, have little desire to lose one of their most important attacking players so late in the window. However, Mateta’s contract situation could complicate matters. If Tottenham were to submit a huge offer that Palace simply could not refuse, the club may be forced to reconsider their position.

Standing at an imposing 6ft 4in, Mateta possesses the physical characteristics that could make him particularly attractive to Tottenham. He is powerful, quick for his size, strong in aerial battles and capable of holding the ball up effectively.

He can also bring a physical presence that allows his teammates to push forward and join attacks. His ability to finish chances, take penalties and work hard without possession makes him a well-rounded striker rather than simply a traditional target man.

For Tottenham, that combination could be extremely valuable.

The North London club are entering a new era under De Zerbi and appear determined to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level. Adding a Premier League-proven striker in his prime could therefore be viewed as another statement of intent.

Mateta is reportedly open to the possibility of leaving Crystal Palace in search of the next challenge in his career, although he is not believed to be forcing his way out of Selhurst Park.

There is also previous interest from elsewhere to consider. AC Milan reportedly came close to signing Mateta in the past, although the move ultimately collapsed after the striker was unable to pass his medical.

Now, Tottenham could have an opportunity to finally bring the Frenchman to North London.

The major question is whether Spurs will make a concrete approach before the September 1 transfer deadline. With time running out, any move would likely need to develop quickly.

Tottenham are also preparing for the opening weekend of the new Premier League season, with De Zerbi’s side set to face Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Whether Mateta will be part of Tottenham’s plans remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: if Spurs decide to push hard for the Palace star, this could become one of the most intriguing late transfer stories of the summer.
